This wine blog was started at 6 AM on a Saturday in June, 2008, having been awake 37 hours straight following a red-eye, wide-eyed trip from Tokyo back home to New York City. I’m still drinking coffee and my heart’s beating in a way that either signals mass transit or mass exodus. My wife sleeps, doesn’t sleep, rolls over a lot, and there’s a pigeon on the street outside my window that’s either drunk or dead or failing yoga and a homeless man poking him with a stick. This is city life, at least at 6 AM. But amid the confusion and haste we take the time to enjoy our wine, lots of it, and we enjoy the hell out of it. We the family of purple lips and ruined shirts; we the embarrassed topplers of bookshelves and embracers of bookish toddlers; the afternoon cheese tasters and midnight rooftop party flaneurs; the bar sidlers and empty promise makers; the slightly damaged perversely artistic idealists who trust as in a god the plump good-natured center of the grape; the swishers and deep breathers; surely willing supplicants and believers of the purported Grand Cru grand mal; diviners of tanin, cherry, smoke; small refrigerator investors; picky eaters and not so picky smokers; lovers of all days that include a chair with a table and a curved glass and maybe friends or maybe not, and maybe in a restaurant and maybe not, and maybe red or maybe white or somewhere in between. And maybe one or maybe not. Surely one. Maybe two. And so why not? Why not write a few passing thoughts here and there on what we like, what we don’t, where we like it and where we don’t? So that’s the reason for the blog. That, and, if you owned PinotGrigio.net, what would you do with it? It’s a dot net! And the dot com guy won’t sell for less than an investment banker’s 401k.
